as Yui gets older he has periods where he seems halfway in a trance. his movements/reactions are sluggish and reverent. his empathetic sense is getting stronger & unfolding from in him, his perception stretches outward, like think of an out of body experience but more like larger than body experience. it's subtle at first but near the end it approaches full blown dreaming awake. he sits silent&still not percieving time & his senses are in overdrive and cacophany like dense, colorful, rhythmic music. he doesn't really see or hear he jsut senses so much all at once. it doesn't distress him, it comes naturally. sean isn't sure how to feel about this; yui becoming dislodged from physicality feels like an abandonment but he CAN follow yui into this trance sometimes, so he at least knows they're still connected

I need to remember to use/check the notes app on my phone more. I ought to write more about yui, I was really big on his story for a while but I hadn't drawn him in a looong time. it's a more... expressiony story than my others... as you can tell by this post probably

In the story, magical girls are a central world infrastructure. there’s like… weird alien monsters attacking earth regularly, as they do. A group of small aliens (I need to name them still) have come to earth and organized a way to resist the bad aliens, by giving power to girls to transform and use magic items to fight them yay. but it’s like integrated into pop culture too, as if the girls are talent and the little alien things are their managers?

in any case, I think the main characters’ team Ginkgo is actually unusual in that they aren’t keeping their identities secret. So they’re like local heroes. The story happens when something weird happens (??) and somehow a ton of the other teams get brainwashed into fighting alongside the big bad aliens.

a description of the naming conventions/physics of the world, er, as if it were a video game lol. under the cut and feel free to skip (I think this stuff is mostly interesting to me idk)

I will finally talk about the characters themselves next time and hopefully I’ll even have their real names decided on by then lol

The story takes place in a wealthy neighborhood on a lake where it's foggy all the time. in the winter it's cold & rainy and in the summer it's muggy and hazy. The neighborhood is a gated community with repetitive, all white but variable style houses, lots of iron gates, etc. The natural plant life is conifers and redwoods but lots of people have inappropriately landscaped yards with palm trees and junk like that

Basics on Nao & Hisoka under the cuts

They both meet at school and Hisoka begs Nao to help him with his homework because he's really struggling. They become best friends and end up really on the same wavelength, even though their backgrounds are so different. Nao is surprisingly receptive to Hisoka's bizarre personality and it's not long before they can both clown around together. At some point they kinda just accept that they're gonna be 2gether 4ever

anyway somehow expressing these two used to came REALLY EASY TO ME in 2013 and I used to be able to draw lil comics of them, so here they are, bear witness to some of the only good characterization per single drawing that I've managed in my life so far (especially that first one, I drew like the day after I designed them and somehow perfectly set their characters/interaction immediately)

I'm going to a job interview tomorrow so I might as well make a related post, about jobs for my characters

For daichi it's important to the story that he have a job at certain parts, but it's been hard to decide on what he should do. when I first made him I tacked on the trait that he was good with computers & that technology was his main interest, but that ended up being merely a placeholder and didn't stick. it fits a lot more with his character now that his hobbies and interests aren't easily job-able. he likes being outside, cooking as a hobby, riding his bike, but none of those things would translate to a job for him, he's not particularly talented at cooking or biking he just finds them enjoyable pastimes (cooking to bond with his mom and because it's kind of meditative, biking bc it intersects with his interest in being outside and it helps him get away in a similarly meditative way)

there are 3 parts to the story, and daichi needs a job in parts 2 & 3. his part 2 job is probably some throwaway like a basic entry level retail position (which he hates but can do) and doesn't need to be anywhere with anything related to him/his interests. a bookstore. idk is a bookstore a dated reference? hahah hah. in part 3 he's moved out to the city so I felt that harkening back to that shoehorned-in hobby of computers from the beginning was actually kind of appropriate, as he doesn't have access to the countryside like he used to so having a indoors-bound job isn't so weird, so I have been thinking computer lab tech at a school or library or something. something not actually very hard, and boring and uneventful. managing keeping the computers up to date, helping old people use the internet, organizing a zillion powerstrips. at the time of where ever I'd end the story (still not sure lol it's not a very well structured experience) he's the only one with a job. it takes suzu a long time to get a job. He went to school in business like his mother wanted, but after graduated decided to finally just not associate with her anymore, stop accepting money from her, and enters a rut. he would be very rusty at piano at this point having had to pretty much give it up to keep up with school. where daichi is ok with having a mind numbing job, suzu is totally not, so it's not until he REALLY NEEDS TO help daichi that he tries to get a job. he is more likely the one to end up in an idyllic, character-fitting job, like running a music store selling/renting instruments lol. the idyllic character-fitting jobs feel to me at the same time hokey and very satisfying lol. I can def see suzu frequenting some local store to use their piano, seeing as he doesn't own one of his own anymore, and making friends with the owners, eventually taking it over, etc.

speaking of idyllic jobs, in post-story AU of nate&rhamiel (nathan & rémy) they totally end up working at a garden store or something like that. I'm jsut gonna go with it. plants are so much easier to draw than like 90% of all things on this planet, I'll make as many of my stories have to do with plants as I want. In the main story, nate works at a supermarket and it's plot-important.

a conundrum is for sean & yui's story, wtf sean does to support himself after the story. it's like one of my most unrealistic (not a good word... idealized? not-bound-by-real-world-rules? ??ethereal??) stories. he basically acts as not a whole single person throughout the story so it feels weird making him get a job.

I should point out this is mostly to talk to myself. I know I'm the only one reading with a baseline of context to understand the majority of what I'm saying here lol. I am writing this post bc I'm feeling weird and need calming down.

I'm apprehensive about getting a job. my anxious side wants to sabotage myself and hopes I bomb the interview but my whatever-other-side knows that gamestop is probably the least awful place for me to work so I hope I get it. I need a job because the more years I go with nothing to put on a resume, the more and more bad it looks. My dad actually told me once that if an employer sees a large gap in time with nothing to say for on a resume they assume it's prison time or something like that. it's jsut up against this wall that I'm thinking "oh but all this stuff I wanted to do, how will I do them if I don't have time". Like if I weren't worried about having a job soon, I might have resubbed to ffxiv for a month, or worked on the next chapter of the [forgotten] pokemon comic I was so excited about last year (a ha ha ha) but in all likelihood I wouldn't have done those things even if I had all the time. I've got my own number by now on this stuff

I've been rusty on making ocs for a long time so I had to consciously work all this out lol here's my notes so far on the main characters here

I was messig around trying to adjust suzu's hairstyle so I can stop bullying him. and fiol wanted to see what he'd look like without curtain hair (I was so unnerved by it at first but looking at it now I think I may use it at some point HAHAH)

I may as well post some suzu-y songs and annotate them

Suzu plays piano so I'm liable to associate every piano song I hear with him, but erik satie in particular is special. I could probably score the whole story with just his music. it's annoying trying to link classical songs because depending on who plays them the effect can be really different

I added the remaining undrawn ones and removed OVER HALF characters from the list yesterday (the number went from 111 to 43 lmao) I'm not really abandoning the other ones just.... shelving them... so I don't have to feel guilty about not caring to draw them

The remaining are the ones I still have interest in drawing. these drawings are still old for the most part and lots of them need minor updating for their designs. it feels good to do this actually, it feels like shedding some commitment to my past self that I didn't realize had been bothering me. I can draw whatever I want and do whatever I want with my characters (so thats a good thing about Giving Up On Art is that now I can start to feel ok to do whatever I want to my ocs as I rightfully should, I can draw AUs and change their features and do whatEVER I want if I just accept that I'll likely never do anything final with these guys and stop holding out like I am someday. I will be ok to post abot stories for this reason too. I cared so much about ~spoiling~ my hypothetical future readers for stories I have such a low likelihood of ever actually making lol)

all OCs currently supported shown under the cuts in no particular order divided into 2 categories:

I feel like I've always had waaay too many OCs and the number only keeps getting bigger bc I make them based on aesthetics I want to internalize, or something, so I end up having lots of shallow OCs that fit certain specific needs instead of fewer, more-deeply developed ones. There are some I find I can't part with but many I very rarely draw or think about. there are some I would feel mostly safe just shelving and not supporting anymore (supporting as in... some old piece of software that you stop making updates for and decide to forget exists. my ocs are like software products to me apparently, this metaphor makes too much sense lol) so I think I will do that. Some are purely aesthetic character designs that I just enjoy drawing sometimes because I'm pleased with the designs. I should maybe make a move to separate them from ocs that actually have story framework and personality. bc EVERYTHING HAS TO BE CATEGORIZED CORRECTLY OR I AM UNCOMFORTABLE.

which means I need to edit down that Chibi OCs list I've been keeping for years & years; I maintain it cause it's super useful but I have to force myself to draw in an old drawing style to keep them all matching lol. But it really is worth it to have a simple ref for their designs all in one place in case I need it or to show people. It's just kind of a bummer about the dated chibi style thing but I can't really change it, it works good for the purposes I need it for

for reference, by last count I had over 100 ocs on my list
